This paperback edition of the 1983 original which was published by the University of British Columbia, presents MacDonald's thirty- year exploration of Haida villages. The book is divided into two parts: an introduction to Haida culture and dwellings, and an inspection of over twenty individual villages. Especially interesting is the author's photography and mapping of Haida structures and carved sculptures, popularly-known as "totem poles," most of which are still in place. Grade: A.
